Rules of Articles for JSC / SSC / HSC students (Part - 3)
Uses of The:
1. সাধারণত নির্দিষ্ট করে কোন কিছুকে বোঝাতে তার পূর্বে the বসে । (i) The Headmaster presided over the meeting. (ii) The man standing there was my uncle.
2. একজাতীয় সকলকে বোঝাতে singular common noun এর পূর্বে the বসে ।
(i) The cow gives us milk. (ii) The tiger is a ferocious animal.
3. নদী, সাগর, উপসাগর, মহাসাগর, জাহাজ, স্টিমার, ট্রেন, পর্বতশ্রেণী, দীপপুঞ্জ, সংবাদপত্র, সাময়িকী ইত্যাদির পূর্বে the বসে । (i) Dhaka stands on the Buriganga. (ii) The Titanic sank on its first voyage.
4. কোন গ্রহ, উপগ্রহ, নক্ষত্র, পৃথিবী, আকাশ, চাঁদ, সূর্য ইত্যাদির পূর্বে the বসে ।
(i) The sun rises in the east. (ii) No one can touch the sky.
5. ধর্মগ্রন্থের বা মহাকাব্যের নামের পূর্বে the বসে । যেমনঃ the Quran, the Bible, The Paradise Lost etc.
6. দেশীয় জাতির পূর্বে the বসে । যেমনঃ the Bangladeshis, the Japanese, the English etc.
7. ধর্মীয় জাতির পূর্বে the বসে । যেমনঃ the Muslims, the Christians etc.
8. তারিখের নামের পূর্বে the বসে । যেমনঃ the 16th December, the 28th December etc. (কিন্তু 16 December, 21 February এভাবে থাকলে তার পূর্বে article বসে না)
9. Superlative Degree এর পরে কোন noun থাকলে সাধারণত এর পূর্বে the বসে । যেমনঃ the biggest tree, the most talented boy, the best girl etc.
10. First, second, third ইত্যাদি ordinal noun এর পূর্বে the বসে । যেমনঃ the 1st boy in the class.
11. বাজানো অর্থে বাদ্যযন্ত্রের পূর্বে the বসে । যেমনঃ He is playing the piano / the guitar etc. কিন্তু, (i) I have a guitar. (ii) Father bought her a violin.
12. যত তত বোঝাতে the বসে থাকে ।
(i) The sooner, the better. (ii) The more you read, the more you learn
13. বিশেষ কোন পেশায় যোগদান করা বোঝাতে the বসে । (i) He joined the Army/ Navy/ Police etc. (ii) I will join the bar. (কিন্তু, He is an army officer / He is a police officer etc)
14. কোন adjective দিয়ে যদি ওই শ্রেণির সকলকে বোঝানো হয়, তার পূর্বে the বসে ।
(i) The rich should help the poor. (ii) The idle suffer in the long run. (iii) The industrious always win.
15. Possessive গুলো উহ্য থাকলে কখনও কখনও তার স্থলে the বসে ।
(i) I hit him on the (his উহ্য) leg. (ii) He called her by the (her উহ্য) nickname.
16. Abstract Noun গুলোকে নির্দিষ্ট করে উল্লেখ করলে তার পূর্বে the বসে ।
(i) The kindness of Mohsin was astonishing. (ii) The honesty of Rehan surprised all.
17. পুরো কোন কিছুর অংশ বিশেষ বোঝালে তার পূর্বে the বসে ।
(i) I like the yellow of the egg. (ii) He saw only the hair of her.
18. দুই ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুর একই গুণের তুলনা করা বোঝালে তার পূর্বে the বসে । (i) Dhaka University is considered the Oxford of the East. (ii) Nazrul is the Shelley of Bangladesh.
19. কোন ব্যক্তি, বস্তু, প্রাণী, প্রতিষ্ঠান ইত্যাদি যে কোন কিছুর কথা পূর্বে উল্লেখ করার পর পরবর্তীতে যদি তাকে বোঝাতে কোন common noun বসে, তবে তার পূর্বে the বসবে ।
(i) We visited Mirpur Zoo in Dhaka. The Zoo was amazing(দ্বিতীয় লাইনের Zooএর কথা পূর্বে উল্লেখিত)
(ii) I saw a strange man there. The man wore a long black coat. (দ্বিতীয় লাইনের man পূর্বে উল্লেখিত)
